Volunteer Opportunities (updated May 18)
Every Redeemer family is encouraged to do volunteer jobs during the school year, part of our Volunteer Service Hours Program. Two-parent families are required to do 30 volunteer hours per year, and single-parent families, 15 hours. Families who do not wish to participate in our Volunteer Service Hours Program will pay $500 in lieu of volunteer hours. Every family submits a $500 post dated volunteer cheque at the beginning of the school year but if the family completes their required hours, the cheque is returned to them. Our volunteer service points program has proven to be a great incentive to get parents and students more involved in helping run our school but the bonus has been an increased sense of community and committment. We are grateful for every family that has ever helped by going on a school trip, coaching a sport, helping in our office, helping with food prep for an event, or sitting on a committee. Redeemer is a better school because of your involvement!
Many volunteer jobs at the school require you have a Police Check done first. If you live in the City of Ottawa and are looking for a Police Record Check form from the Ottawa Police Services, click here to download a PDF copy of the form. Those families living in outlying areas will need a police check from the O.P.P.
Here are some Parent Volunteer Jobs to be filled:
We need two people to look after snacks and beverages for our upcoming Spring Membership Meeting, Monday, May 27, 7 pm. We're looking for someone to go out and buy fruit (for fruit platters), maybe cheese and crackers and some squares or cookies (keep your receipts for re-imbursement!) Then you will have to set everything out on platters in the school kitchen, and also make coffee, punch and tea and have everything ready for 7 pm next Monday night. If you would like to get some volunteer hours this way, please contact Mary in the school office. You will get hours for the shopping, the prep time and for staying for the meeting and cleaning up afterward - about 6 hours each or 12 hours for a couple.
Our most urget need for volunteers this spring 2013 is helping with our capital campaign, which is raising funds for our building expansion project. If you are interested in being trained as a canvasser, or phone canvasser, or can help with clerical tasks, or want to join our prayer team, or make food for supper meetings , This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it The sooner we all pitch in to help out with this Capital Campaign, the sooner we will raise the funds necessary and start construction!
Do you know anything about Search Engine Optimization or web searchability? We are wanting to maximize Redeemer's website exposure on the internet but need help from a tech savvy parent! If this is something you understand and have experience with, please contact Marie Cooper.
We are looking for people to help in our kitchen on Grandfriends' Day, May 24. We provide lunch for the seniors who visit us that day, and our students too - about 250 people. It takes quite a few people in our kitchen to make sure all the food is ready. After lunch, there is clean up to be done. If you are available to help with this fun event, please e-mail Marie Cooper.
Do you enjoy writing? Are you a parent or student who loves our school? We are always looking for testimonials for our website, or Redeemer Reminder. Tell us why your family has benefitted from being part of the Redeemer family and get volunteer hours in the process! Even if you feel you cannot write about your experience as a Redeemer family yourself, if you are willing to spend time being interviewed, please Contact Marie Cooper.
Do you like to cook or coordinate simple meals? We often have groups that meet for dinner meetings (i.e. our Board Executive, our Capital Campaign and Building Committee.) If you ever want to bring in a simple meal on one of these ocassions and get volunteer hours in the process and bless one of these groups, please e-mail Marie Cooper. The next dinner meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 27, 5 pm. There will another supper meeting approx. two weeks after that one.
Mr. Laliberte, our Athletics Director, is often looking for parents or grandparents who are willing to coach one of our sports teams, or to be an assistant coach, or to just organize drives to games, or a trip to an out of town tournament. If your child will be playing on a particular sports team anyway, consider playing an active role on that team! If this sounds like something you can do to collect your volunteer hours, please contact Mr. Laliberte.
We are always looking for parents to lead extra-curricular, lunch-time activities next year. If you have a hobby or passion you'd like to share with teens, consider coming into the school one lunch period a week next year to run a club. (photography? chess? crafts? dance? juggling? what's your passion!) If you are interested, contact David Naftel. The activity does not have to run all year - it could just be once a week for 6 or 8 weeks, etc.
The Property Management Committee organizes work activities the first Thursday evening of each month. If you are "handy" and would like to serve on this committee or just help out with specific projects from time to time (and earn Volunteer Service Points while you're at it) please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it in our school office for more info.
After school is finished in June, Mary Joustra often has cleaning, sorting textbooks and organizing to be done. If you are available to come in and help in the week immediately following exams, please contact Mrs. Joustra.
Please remember that attending ANY school meeting or event gets you volunteer hours! Bring your spouse and double your hours. Keep track of all your hours throughout the year, and hand in a tally sheet next June. Parents, plan to attend our Spring Membership Meeting on May 27 at 7 pm and collect 2 to 3 hours, double that if you bring your spouse!
Another great way to get ALL your volunteer points at once is to refer a family that is not already on our school's leads list. If your referral results in a brand new family signing up, you will receive ALL your points for the next school year. So get out there and talk up Redeemer to all your friends and neighbours!

Volunteer jobs that involve supervising or driving students require you to have a Police Check done ahead of time. For people living in the City of Ottawa, download the Police Record Check form here. People living in outlying areas need to pick up a form from the O.P.P.
